's baby and the fiscal cliff countdown thing, it's about to get serious. >>> i'm steve kornacki. fiscal cliff tops the list of banished words. sloped does not agree on the list. i fully agree. >> >>> i'm crystal ball. never again after today. who am i kidding? cliff, cliff, cliff! i can't stop myself. >>> the latest on kim kardashian, kanye and the baby ahead but the other story in the headlines today. america staring down the fiscal cliff. t-minus nine hours and counting and washington is wasting no time. senate minority leader mcconnell saying both sides are close to a deal. it's about time. >> my preference would have been to solve all these problems in the context of a larger agreement, a bigger deal, a grand bargain. whatever you want to call it. that solves our deficit problems in a balanced and responsible way. with this congress, that was obviously a little bit too much to hope for at this time. it may be we can do it in stages. >> there are a number of issues on which the two sides are still apart but negotiations are continuing as i speak. but we really are running out of time

.c. 10:00 p.m. hawaii time. there doesn't seem to be a lot of urgency rarg the fiscal cliff. are they geared up and ready to work on this? >> i think they are. they are hoping that the pressure to get something done will encourage everyone to come to the table to compromise. if you think about it, they have less than a week to get a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. not a lot of time. how did we get to this point? taking you back to last week, you remember john boehner tried to get that alternative bill through the house. his own bill. he didn't have the support to do it. it fell apart. now things are in the senate and it will be up to harry reid and mitch connell and the president to try to come to a compromise to avoid the tax hikes and spending cuts that go into effect on the first of the year. president obama had been working with house speaker john boehner and trying to get a big deal that dealt with tax reform and deficit reduction. that fell apart and talks have largely been stalled this entire time. there was a lost pressure to get something done. we have seen some of

ceiling even before we tumble over the fiscal cliff. good morning from washington. it is thursday, december 27th. this is "the daily rundown." i'm luke russert. two days after christmas and washington is back to work trying to harsh out a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. the senate will get back from the session after holiday break. the president is expected to arrive back to the white house without his family to get back to twork mework to meet the loo deadline. mike is at the white house. let's start with you. the consensus around the hill is that we are more likely than not to go over the fiscal cliff, but there is a small chance harry reid could take a house pass bill and amend it and send it back over to the house. what are you hear being that? >> conceivably, but when the president lights upon the south lawn and the marine one later this morning, it's unclear why he is coming back and who will be here with him. as you mentioned, speaker boehner remains in ohio where he is from. he is not coming back to washington. neither is the house of representatives. they simply said it's

was talking about the fiscal cliff. >> some of the leading voices this morning told me that, first of all, we are on fantasy island, and secondly, another leading voice said that everything that happens today is inconsequential. >> right. >> i will tell you, i don't think it is. i think it matters and i think everybody wants one thing, for washington to get it done, get a deal done! get a deal done! >> but this deal is only a precursor to the more important deal. >> yeah, well, at some point -- >> she wants you to get that one done, too. >> get it all done. >> at some point we're going to hurt ourselves very badly. we already have. well, if it's way too early, it's time for "morning joe," but now it's time for the fix. the fix is in for chuck todd and "the daily rundown." >>> the ball will drop in times square tonight at the stroke of midnight, but in washington, have lawmakers already dropped the ball? with less than 15 hours to go before the fiscal cliff deadline, the new year's countdown is taking on a whole new meaning. >>> health scare. just days before secretary of state hillary clinton
